With marked charisma, EMMAUS exhibits elegance and finesse under the guidance of acclaimed winemaker Andy Erickson. The 2015 Emmaus Cabernet Sauvignon presents the potential of our steep, east-facing hillside, in a year of great concentration and structure. The vintage came on the heels of an extended drought in California, which had an interesting effect on the vines themselves. It was as if they knew to produce a smaller crop than usual, with tiny berries and smaller clusters. The result is a dark, very aromatic, flavorful wine with deep, complex character and a firm structure. The volume is turned up on this wine, even as it is tightly packed at such a young age. All of the defining elements of our vineyard are on display: the blue-black-purple color, highly expressive aromatics of wild berries, freshly ground coffee, and dried herbs and spices. After decanting, the wine continues to open for hours, revealing ever more layers of fruit and spice, while the tannins round and soften. All this points to the future- the wine will age for decades to come.
