Winemaker Andy Erickson’s notes on the 2020 EMMAUS Cabernet Sauvignon:
“The 2020 vintage showed the benefits of a cool appellation in a warm season. Our vineyard in Coombsville benefits from its proximity to the San Pablo Bay, as well as its steep, north-east facing aspect. The season in 2022 saw above average temperatures, with a crescendo of heat at the end of the season. Our vineyard, however, being protected from the afternoon sun and situated in this fairer part of the Valley, performed remarkably well and delivered fruit with great aromatic potential, ripe tannins, and great natural acidity. We were also far away from the calamity that struck the northern end of Napa Valley with the now infamous fires.
After careful extraction and fermentation, the wine was aged in half-new French oak barrels for 19 months. It was bottled without fining or filtration to capture the essence of the vineyard and the vintage. The result is a dark, deep, complex wine with nuance and freshness as well. A signature of this vineyard has been a broad-shouldered structure along with a dark, rich character—chocolate, dried herbs, and incense ride on a core of red fruits. Black cherry, raspberry, and currant notes linger on the palate. This wine is enjoyable right now with some decanting, and will live a very long life in the cellar. Those with the patience to wait will be rewarded for sure. An excellent expression of this special Coombsville appellation!”
